PM Modi Calls Constitutional Duties the ‘Bedrock’ of Indian Democracy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message to the nation on Constitution Day, emphasized the pivotal role of Constitutional duties, describing them as the “bedrock of a strong and vibrant democracy.”

In a letter addressed to citizens on Wednesday, PM Modi stressed the collective responsibility of actively exercising the right to vote as a way to strengthen democracy. He proposed that educational institutions, specifically schools and colleges, should mark the occasion by honoring first-time voters who are turning 18.

Recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy that rights flow from the fulfillment of duties, the Prime Minister stated that discharging these responsibilities is vital for India’s social and economic progress. He urged citizens to keep their duties at the forefront as the country advances toward its vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), noting that today’s decisions will shape the future of generations.

“Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty. While it empowers us with rights, it also reminds us of our duties as citizens, which we should always try to fulfil. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy,” Modi posted on X.

He also paid tribute to the framers of the Constitution, acknowledging that their “vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat.” (TNIE)
