PANAJI: (Dec 7) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant after a fire at a nightclub in the coastal state caused the death of 25 people.
“The fire accident in Arpora, Goa, is very sad. My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones. I hope the injured people get well soon,” Modi wrote on X.
“I spoke to Goa CM Dr Pramod Sawant Ji about the situation. The State Government is giving all possible help to those who are affected,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) gave a separate statement, saying: “The families of those who died in the Arpora, Goa, accident will get ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The injured people will get ₹50,000.”
23 people died in the blaze at ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ late on Saturday night. This popular party place in Arpora village, which is about 25 km from Panaji, opened last year.
Chief Minister Sawant said that most of the people who died were kitchen workers at the club, and this included three women. He added that there were also “three to four tourists” among the dead.
Sawant told reporters that three people died from burn injuries, and the others died because of suffocation. At least 25 people died and six were injured in a big fire at a nightclub in North Goa, which started just after midnight on Sunday.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the spot and told reporters that three people died because of burn injuries, and the others died due to not being able to breathe (suffocation). Sawant said that initial information shows the nightclub did not follow fire safety rules.
The fire started shortly after midnight at ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’, a popular party spot in Arpora village, which is about 25 km from Panaji, the state capital. The club started last year.
“We will take action against the club’s management and also against the officers who allowed the club to run even though it broke safety rules,” Sawant said.
“This is a sad event during the main tourist season in the coastal state,” he said.
“We will do a detailed investigation into the incident, and strict action will be taken against those who are guilty,” the Chief Minister added. (PTI & TNIE)
