Wildfires Ravage Chile: 18 Dead, State of Catastrophe Declared as Heatwave Sweeps South American Nation.

SANTIAGO: At least 18 people have lost their lives as massive wildfires continue to tear through central and southern Chile. Fueled by a blistering heatwave and strong winds, the blaze has already scorched over 21,000 acres of forest land and reduced hundreds of homes to ashes, forcing thousands of residents to flee for safety.

In response to the escalating crisis, Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared a ‘state of catastrophe’ in the Biobio and Ñuble regions, located approximately 500 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago. This emergency designation facilitates swifter coordination between the military and emergency services to combat over two dozen active fire fronts.

Speaking from the devastated city of Concepción, President Boric warned that the death toll and the count of destroyed properties—currently estimated at 300 houses—are expected to rise as rescue teams reach the interior pockets. “The priority is to extinguish the fire, but we cannot ignore the human tragedies and the families suffering,” the President stated.

However, the government has faced criticism over its response speed. Rodrigo Vera, the Mayor of Penco, expressed frustration on local radio, alleging that his community burned for hours without any significant government or military presence. Firefighters currently face an uphill task as extreme temperatures and unpredictable wind patterns make it difficult to contain the inferno. (TNIE)
