More Shrines in Uttarakhand Seek to Restrict Entry of Non-Hindus Ahead of Char Dham Yatra.
DEHRADUN: A movement to restrict the entry of non-Hindus into major shrines in Uttarakhand is gaining momentum just before the commencement of the Char Dham Yatra. Following the installation of ‘no entry for non-Hindus’ signages at Har-ki-Pauri in Haridwar, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) is now drafting a proposal to implement similar restrictions. BKTC chairman Hemant Dwivedi stated that the move is essential to maintain the religious integrity of these pilgrimage sites, emphasizing that they are holy places and not tourist destinations. He confirmed that a proposal has been drafted with broad consensus and will soon be officially ratified in a board meeting. The push for this ban is rooted in the Haridwar Municipal Act of 1916. While the Pushkar Singh Dhami government is currently studying the legal aspects of these century-old bylaws, the Chief Minister has indicated that the final decision will follow the counsel of saints and temple committees.
