At least 14 people were killed and 23 others injured after a private travel bus caught fire following a head-on collision with a gravel-laden tipper lorry in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram district on Thursday morning. The horrific accident occurred near Rayavaram village around 6:00 AM while most passengers were asleep.
According to police officials, the impact of the crash caused the bus’s diesel tank to explode, instantly engulfing the vehicle in flames and trapping passengers inside. Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju confirmed that the injured, including the bus driver and the lorry driver, have been shifted to government hospitals in Markapuram and Guntur.
The bus, operated by Harikrishna Travels, was en route from Jagityal in Telangana to Kaligiri in Nellore district. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed deep shock over the tragedy and ordered a high-level probe into the incident. (TNIE)
