THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: High drama and violence unfolded in the state capital after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concluded its raids at the rented residence of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Angry CPI(M) workers attacked the ED convoy, completely smashing the windshields and windows of all three vehicles used by the central agency. The vehicles faced widespread stone-pelting and vandalism.
The CPI(M) workers surrounded the ED vehicles and attempted to storm into Vijayan’s residence, forcing the police personnel deployed at the spot to resort to a lathi charge to control the situation. Earlier, the central agency completed its searches and left Pinarayi Vijayan’s ancestral house at Pandalyamukku in Kannur and former minister P A Mohamed Riyas’s residence in Kozhikode. The searches had commenced at 8:30 AM. According to the official mahazar (seizure memo), no documents related to the money laundering case were found during the inspection at Vijayan’s house.
In Kannur, CPI(M) workers booed and shouted slogans against the ED officials as they emerged from the Pandalyamukku residence. Due to the intense blockade by the party workers, the central officials found themselves stranded and unable to leave the area. The stranded officials eventually reached out to local CPI(M) leaders, requesting them to intervene and clear a path for their safe exit.
The protesting party workers maintained a rigid stance, refusing to let the ED officials leave the premises. Sensing the gravity of the situation, senior CPI(M) leader M V Jayarajan intervened and urged the party workers to disperse and withdraw the blockade. Massive protests had erupted outside Vijayan’s Kannur residence as soon as the raids began in the morning, which quickly escalated into statewide agitations organized by the CPI(M) leadership.
