Gen N.S. Raja Subramani Takes Charge as India’s New Chief of Defence Staff.

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani has officially taken charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). A veteran military officer with decades of operational experience and command leadership, General N.S. Raja Subramani succeeds General Anil Chauhan in this top military position. Having started his military career in the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, Raja Subramani has an extensive service record spanning more than 37 years in the Indian Army.

Prior to this appointment, he had been serving as the Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025. He also served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024. A native of Tamil Nadu, he is the very first individual from South India to rise to the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the country. General N.S. Raja Subramani is also a highly decorated officer who has provided exceptional leadership in several of the nation’s critical military missions, including ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Expressing his thoughts upon assuming office, General N.S. Raja Subramani stated that he felt deeply honored to take charge as the Chief of Defence Staff and expressed his gratitude for the trust the nation has reposed in the armed forces. He emphasized that the military remains fully committed to implementing the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘JAI’ (Jointness, Atma Nirbharta, Innovation). He added that primary focus would be accorded to organizational reforms aimed at the transformation of the armed forces and enhancing mutual jointness and integration. He further noted that self-reliance (Atma Nirbharta) is a core pillar of India’s national security, and the development as well as induction of indigenous weapons into the armed forces will be fast-tracked.
