THIRUTHANANTHAPURAM: The state government has in-principle agreed to hand over the investigation into the tragic suicide of former Kannur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) K Naveen Babu to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). An official confirmation regarding the transfer is highly expected to be announced after the next cabinet meeting, according to informed sources.
The developments moved quicker after Naveen’s grieving family met with Chief Minister V D Satheesan and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Friday. During the meeting, the family formally requested that the sensitive case be handed over to the central agency for a transparent probe.
Naveen was found dead at his official quarters in Kannur on October 15, 2024. This occurred just a day after he was publicly humiliated and accused of corruption by the then Kannur district panchayat president P P Divya during a farewell event organized at the Kannur collectorate. His untimely demise triggered a massive public outcry across the state, subsequently leading to the arrest of Divya for abetting his suicide. She has been named the sole accused in the case.
Naveen’s family had repeatedly expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation by the state police, explicitly alleging that the local probe was being politically managed and compromised.
Meanwhile, police sources stated that they have not yet received any formal written order regarding the transfer of the case file to the CBI. However, they admitted to having received unofficial feelers and indications from higher government levels in this regard.
