MANANTHAVADY: A plantation worker who was undergoing emergency medical treatment after being mauled by a wild elephant at Kattikulam in Thirunelli, Wayanad, has succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has been identified as Raju (50), a native of Vellanchery. The tragic incident unfolded on Thursday morning when Raju inadvertently ran into a wild tusker while local residents and forest officials were attempting to drive the animal out of the human settlement.
Raju sustained life-threatening injuries to his ribs and internal organs during the violent elephant attack. The rogue elephant reportedly knocked him down with its trunk and dragged him for nearly 20 meters along the ground. He was immediately rushed to the Mananthavady Medical College Hospital by onlookers and forest rangers, but he eventually closed his eyes forever while undergoing critical medical care.
The wild tusker, which spread panic across the residential zone for several hours, was finally driven back into the forest area after a coordinated effort by the forest department and local residents. Being an area situated in close proximity to the forest borders, the presence of wild elephants has always been a frequent issue in Kattikulam. Although there was a brief respite from wild elephant encounters recently, the sudden intrusion of the rogue elephant this morning re-ignited panic across the community. Expressing anger over the tragic death of the plantation worker, a massive protest led by CPIM party workers is currently underway near the Mananthavady Medical College mortuary premises.
