KOCHI: In a series of intensive raids conducted under the anti-drug initiative ‘Operation Thunder’, the Excise Department has seized a significant commercial quantity of MDMA and arrested three individuals, including two women, across Kochi and Perumbavoor. The arrested individuals in the city limits have been identified as Muhasheeb, a native of Kollam, and Ashika Tanveer, hailing from Thrissur. The Excise squad recovered 6.03 grams of MDMA from their possession during the interception.
In a separate but connected crackdown in Perumbavoor, a woman running a blatant open-street drug peddling racket was also apprehended. The accused, identified as 23-year-old Najma Begum, a native of Assam, had been actively distributing contraband to local users. Recently, a highly disturbing video clip showing Najma Begum publicly injecting narcotics into a young man’s arm had surfaced online. As soon as the footage caught the attention of law enforcement and top intelligence officials, a specialized police dragnet was deployed to track her down, leading to her immediate arrest.
The initial arrests of Muhasheeb and Ashika Tanveer were executed by the Excise Enforcement & Anti-Narcotic Special Squad right in front of ‘Hazel Gardens’, a lodge situated near the Ernakulam South Metro Station. Investigation revealed that the duo routinely smuggled premium-grade MDMA from Bengaluru and checked into various budget lodges across the city under false names to distribute it. Their operations were primarily active during late-night hours to evade local patrolling teams. The authorities have booked all three accused under the stringent sections of the NDPS Act and produced them before the magistrate for remand.
