THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Fort Police have officially recorded the arrest of a man named Athul following the tragic suicide of his 27-year-old wife, Aarathy, a native of Varkala, at their rented residence in Attukal. The accused has been charged under relevant penal sections for domestic violence and abetment of suicide. According to law enforcement officials, definitive digital and physical evidence confirming severe domestic abuse has been recovered, and the accused will be produced before the local court today.
Aarathy, the daughter of Baiju and Jinu from Vadaserikonam in Varkala, married Athul, a native of Bharathannoor in Kallara, around one and a half years ago. The couple had shifted to a rented house in Chiramukku, Attukal, six months prior to the incident. Aarathy’s family alleged that Athul initiated brutal physical harassment within three months of marriage under various pretexts. It was revealed that the accused had systematically pledged approximately 50 sovereigns of gold ornaments belonging to Aarathy.
In addition to constant harassment for money and gold, Aarathy’s relatives claimed that Athul was involved in extra-marital relationships, which led to frequent domestic disputes. Seeking help, Aarathy had previously sent graphic photographs of her injuries and marks of physical assault to her mother via WhatsApp. On the day of the incident, Aarathy telephoned her mother to report a severe physical beating following an argument with Athul, shortly after which she took her own life. Crucially, even after realizing that Aarathy was attempting self-harm inside the room, Athul allegedly made no immediate rescue attempts and only opened the door after calling his friends to the spot. The police team has recovered a suicide note and a personal diary from the scene for further forensic investigation.
