New Delhi: A high-voltage ‘Sansad Chalo’ march organized by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session turned into a violent clash in the heart of the national capital. The protest, demanding accountability over exam irregularities and the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, ended with police using tear gas, resorting to lathi-charges, and detaining over 70 individuals. More than 50 Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel were injured in the violence, including over five IPS officers, alongside several injured protesters.
Despite heavy downpours, thousands of CJP supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar and attempted to push past police barricades to find alternative routes toward Parliament. As police buses and vehicles suffered heavy damage, Delhi Police registered multiple FIRs and initiated a probe into a potential larger conspiracy. Officials are closely examining CCTV footage and investigating viral social media posts—including fake claims regarding protester casualties—allegedly circulated by political entities and foreign accounts.
Wangchuk Decides to Continue Fast
Reacting to the street violence from Safdarjung Hospital, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk announced that he would continue his indefinite hunger strike. In a handwritten statement, Wangchuk condemned the police action: “Seeing the brutality with which peacefully protesting youth are being dealt with, I have decided to continue my fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the parliamentarians at the Sansad Bhawan or I am allowed to meet them here at the hospital”. He appealed to the government and police forces to resolve the crisis by allowing students to formally present their grievances to Parliament.
