Breaking Communal Barriers: Muslim Woman Revives Kalamandalam Hyderali’s Legacy in Kathakali Sangeetham

KOCHI: Following in the footsteps of 16-year-old Sabri, who recently made history as the first Muslim girl to perform Kathakali at Kerala Kalamandalam, another young woman is winning hearts. On December 27, Fathima Isthik broke communal barriers by performing a verse from the play ‘Lavanasura Vadham’ at the Porur Siva Temple in Malappuram. Through their dedication to the arts, these youngsters are effectively building bridges between communities.

As Fathima rendered the soulful verse ‘Sukhamo Devi…’ before an audience of art lovers, many were moved to remember the legendary late Kalamandalam Hyderali. Hyderali was a pioneer who brought immense emotional depth and unique modulations to Kathakali music. The specific piece Fathima sang captures the poignant reunion of Lord Hanuman and Sita Devi at Sage Valmiki’s ashram, years after her exile.

Hailing from a traditional Muslim family in Vaniyambalam, Malappuram, Fathima’s talent was evident since her childhood. She was a regular participant in light music competitions during her school days. It was her teacher, Rasheeda, at the WIC School in Vandoor, who first noticed that Fathima’s vocal texture was perfectly suited for the rigorous style of Kathakali Sangeetham.

“I was in the 9th standard when my teacher introduced me to my guru, Deepa Palanad,” Fathima shared. Under Deepa’s tutelage, she honed her skills and represented her school at the State Youth Festival in 2016. Pursuing her passion further, she completed her BA and MA in Music from the prestigious Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.

Though a trained Carnatic vocalist, Fathima admits a special affinity for the emotive melodies of Kathakali and traditional folk music. (TNIE)
