THRISSUR: A shocking video has emerged showing police officers brutally attacking Youth Congress leader V.S. Sujith inside a police station in Thrissur. The incident happened on April 6, 2023, but the CCTV footage was only released after a two-year legal fight using the Right to Information Act.
Details of the Incident
- Victim: V.S. Sujith, the Youth Congress president of the Chowannur region.
- Attackers: The assault was allegedly led by then Sub-Inspector Nuhman at the Kunnamkulam police station. At least five police personnel were involved.
- Cause: Sujith was taken to the station after he tried to intervene when police were threatening his friends on the roadside.
- Injuries: He suffered serious injuries, including hearing damage in one ear.
- Police Claims vs. Reality: Police claimed Sujith was drunk and had interfered with their work, but a medical report proved he was sober.
The Fight for Justice
According to Congress sources, the police officers were only transferred, despite official complaints being filed against them. Sujith had to fight for two years to get the CCTV footage from the police station, as his requests were repeatedly delayed. The video he finally obtained clearly shows two officers physically assaulting him.
Congress Demands Action
The Congress party has strongly condemned the attack. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan called the footage “clear evidence of police misconduct.” He urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also handles the police department, to take strong action.
“These are not policemen, but criminals in khaki uniforms,” Satheesan said. The Thrissur DCC president, Joseph Tajet, demanded that the officers be fired from the Kerala police force. He claimed the police felt confident they would be protected by the department, even while being recorded on camera.
