Putin and Kim Jong Un to Join China’s Military Parade

Beijing, August 28 (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will attend a military parade in Beijing next week. This will be the first time the two leaders appear publicly with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Their attendance is a strong message to Western countries.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, 26 foreign leaders will be at the parade, but no major Western leaders will be there. The only exception is Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, a member of the European Union.

The parade, which celebrates “Victory Day” on September 3, will highlight China’s growing military strength. The presence of the three leaders shows a united front not only between China and developing nations but also with Russia and North Korea, both of which are facing international sanctions.

Russia is a key partner for China but has been hit hard by Western sanctions since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Putin, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, last visited China in 2024.

North Korea, a formal ally of China, has been under United Nations sanctions since 2006 for its nuclear weapons and missile programs. Kim last visited China in January 2019.
