In a petition, the governor stated that the founding laws of both universities did not give the CM a part in the selection process. He asked the court to direct the selection committee to submit a list of potential vice-chancellors to the Chancellor (Governor), not the Chief Minister.
The petition also requested that the list of candidates be presented in alphabetical order, giving the final authority to choose the VC to the governor. Additionally, the governor has asked for a nominee from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to be included on the search committee.
The Supreme Court had previously appointed retired Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia to head the search committee for the two universities.
Higher Education Minister R. Bindu called the governor’s move “unfortunate,” saying the government wants to resolve all issues amicably. She described the demand to exclude the Chief Minister as “immature and baseless.”
