Ammathottil in Kerala Cradles 15 Infants This Year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A four-day-old baby girl named Thumba became the 11th infant to be received at the Thiruvananthapuram Ammathottil this year, highlighting the crucial role of the state-run child care center. The baby, weighing 2.8 kilograms, was admitted on the morning of Thiruvonam and is in good health, according to a caretaker.

Across the state, Ammathottil facilities have received a total of 15 infants in 2025. This includes 11 children at the Thiruvananthapuram center and four in Alappuzha. Of these, nine are girls and six are boys.

The Ammathottil project, run by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare (KSCCW), provides a safe haven for abandoned, orphaned, and rescued children. The staff notes that many of these infants have special medical needs.

So far this year, 52 children have been adopted through the council’s system. The Thiruvananthapuram center consistently records the highest number of admissions and currently cares for 61 children.

According to KSCCW general secretary G.L. Arungopi, the Ammathottil project is crucial for providing a caring environment for children whose parents are unable to look after them due to various circumstances.
