Kerala’s First Film Society Theatre Still Thrives as a Hub for Cinema Lovers

The Phalke Film Society Theatre in Puthiyappu, Vadakara, Kerala, which holds the distinction of being the state’s first film society-owned cinema hall, continues to champion and celebrate the art of cinema eight years after its opening. More than just a place to watch movies, this cultural landmark has become a symbol of Kerala’s strong cinephile traditions, a space where films are deeply appreciated and discussed.

The society began in 1986 when a group of enthusiastic film lovers aimed to make movie culture more accessible. Their very first screening, John Abraham’s Amma Ariyan, established a focus that combined artistic interest with social awareness.

The theatre, which seats 60 viewers in AC comfort, was converted from part of the society’s library to expand its reach. Upholding its community focus, the society screens films free of cost to ensure world cinema is accessible to everyone.

Preman M, the society’s secretary, noted that they inform regular viewers via a WhatsApp group. “Every Friday at 6 pm, we screen mostly foreign films,” he explained. The remaining days are set aside for requests from groups like students and Kudumbashree units, emphasizing that “This theatre belongs to the people who love cinema.” With input from TNIE.
