New Delhi: Armored Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) is speeding up the development of a new light tank called the ‘Bharat’ (Bharat Light Tank) as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative to promote homegrown defense manufacturing. The company aims to finalize the design by the end of 2025 and have the first prototype ready by the end of 2026.
This tank will be based on the Russian 2S25 Sprut-SD model. It will be an amphibious tank, meaning it can cross rivers and lakes, and will be armed with a powerful 125mm cannon, giving it firepower comparable to much larger battle tanks.
The ‘Bharat’ tank is being specifically designed to operate in high-altitude areas like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. It will include advanced features such as an Active Protection System (APS), an anti-drone jammer, and a modern fire control system. Over 60% of its parts will be manufactured in India, boosting the defense industry in Avadi, Tamil Nadu.
The Indian Army realized the need for light tanks after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, where their heavy tanks struggled in the mountains while China used its lightweight ZTQ-15 tanks effectively.
The Army plans to eventually purchase 354 light tanks. While the first 59 “Zorawar” tanks are being manufactured by L&T and DRDO, the remaining 295 tanks, including AVNL’s “Bharat Tank,” will be part of a competition. The “Bharat” tank is estimated to cost an affordable Rs 20-25 crore per unit. If successful, this new tank could significantly enhance the security of India’s mountainous borders.
