Kerala MVD busts inter-state racket over scrapped government vehicle re-registration fraud

KOLLAM (KERALA): (Nov 17) The Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) in Punalur has uncovered a suspected inter-state vehicle fraud involving the attempted re-registration of a scrapped state government two-wheeler, which was falsely claimed to have been abandoned by the Indian armed forces, officials confirmed on Monday.

The incident came to light when a Royal Enfield motorcycle, bearing the registration number HP-47-A-4670, was presented for re-registration at the Punalur Sub-Regional Transport Office (SRTO).

During the inspection, the Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector noticed discrepancies in the motorcycle’s chassis number. A subsequent check in the Parivahan database revealed that the bike was originally a state government vehicle, previously used by the Kerala Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) and registered in Thiruvananthapuram as KL-01-AV-4409.

MVD officials stated that under state policy, these vehicles are scrapped after 15 years of service and are not permitted for further registration. They discovered that the bike, scrapped in Kerala, had been fraudulently registered in Himachal Pradesh’s Dalhousie RTO as an ex-Army/auction vehicle using forged documents.

The MVD suspects that the person who bought the vehicle for scrapping may have sold it to dealers in other states, who then used the fraudulent scheme to get it re-registered. The Punalur police are expected to register a case and initiate a full investigation. (PTI)
