Alappuzha Farmer Creates Living ‘Pookkalam’ for Onam.

ALAPPUZHA: In a unique blend of farming and tradition, a farmer named S.P. Sujith Swaminikarthil from Kanjikuzhi has created a living ‘pookkalam’ (floral carpet) for the Onam festival. Instead of using cut flowers, he grew a massive floral carpet directly in his field.

What Makes This Pookkalam Unique?
Sujith’s creation is a one-of-a-kind art piece.

Living Art: The pookkalam is made from over 15 different types of plants, including marigold, globe amaranth, and jasmine.

Creative Farming: The plants are arranged in neat, circular rows over a 24-meter radius on six cents of land.

Diverse Plants: He used about 25 varieties of plants, including flowers like bendhi and jamanthi, as well as vegetables like green chili and spinach, adding to the vibrant design.

Cost and Purpose: The project cost around ₹25,000, and Sujith plans to earn money by harvesting the flowers and chilies for the Onam season.

Sujith’s Journey as a Farmer
Sujith, a 38-year-old with a hotel management degree, left his job in a gold company in 2012 to become a farmer. He started by cultivating vegetables on rented land and later found success with bio farming. He has received the state’s Best Farmer award multiple times. Two years ago, he was part of a delegation that visited Israel to learn about modern farming methods. He has also established a model farm in the Cherthala region. This Onam season, he has cultivated vegetables and flowers on about 10 acres of leased land.
