Call for Reforms in Kerala Prisons Following Contraband Seizures and Security Lapses

KOCHI: In Kochu Kadavanthra, a coastal city in Kerala, officers from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) raided the home of a mid-level prison officer.

What they found revealed more than just a single person’s bad behavior. It brought to light a growing problem within the state’s prison system.

The officer, Shiras Basheer, an assistant prison officer at the Ernakulam district jail, was already being watched when officers searched his home earlier this year.
