Kerala Considers Thorium Power, Rejects Traditional Nuclear Energy

PALAKKAD (KERALA): Kerala’s Electricity Minister, K. Krishnankutty, announced on Monday that the state is looking into building a power plant that uses thorium. He confirmed that they are not considering a traditional nuclear power plant.

“A nuclear power plant is not being considered. However, a thorium power plant is a possibility,” he said. “Our report shows that thorium power is waste-free and good for the environment. Nuclear power plants have a problem with waste disposal, but thorium plants do not.”

The minister added that Kerala has enough thorium in its mineral-rich sands to create electricity for 200 years.
