The Karma Samithi will request a Presidential reference to seek the Supreme Court’s opinion under Article 143 on the possibility of forming a special administrative system for the Sabarimala temple, modelled on the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which is governed by a committee headed by the District and Sessions Judge of Thiruvananthapuram. The committee will have representatives from the Central and State Governments, the Thanthri family, and the former Travancore Royal Family as members.
“We have been granted permission for a meeting with the President when she visits Sabarimala on October 22,” said S.J.R. Kumar, the General Convener of the Samithi. Pointing to the disappearance of gold, he alleged that successive members and employees of the Travancore Devaswom Board are mismanaging the Sabarimala temple. “Since the Sabarimala temple is of national importance, the President can seek the Supreme Court’s advice to form a better administrative system,” he told TNIE. He added that the then President had made a reference in the Ayodhya temple case in 1993.
Article 143 empowers the President to seek the advisory opinion of the Supreme Court on any matter of public importance or a question of law.
