UDF Boycotts Global Ayyappa Meet Organized by Government

The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has announced it will not participate in the Global Ayyappa Meet, an event at Pampa co-hosted by the LDF government and the Travancore Devaswom Board.

The decision was made during an online meeting of the UDF state committee, as several alliance partners expressed concerns about the ruling CPM’s real intentions. UDF leaders believe the meeting has a political agenda.

A UDF leader told TNIE that the government has not withdrawn its earlier affidavit to the Supreme Court, which supported the entry of women of all ages into Sabarimala. The front also pointed out that for the past nine years, the LDF government has not held the ‘Pamba Sangamam,’ a meeting for Ayyappa devotees from southern states that was a tradition during UDF rule.

“What is the role of political parties and leaders in a matter related to devotees?” a leader questioned.

The UDF also views the government’s motive with suspicion because it has not dropped the criminal cases filed against devotees who took part in protest processions. The front believes the LDF government is now trying to win over votes from the majority community by appealing to religious sentiments to counter anti-government feelings.

However, the UDF has stated that it will not stop any devotees who wish to attend the meeting.
