UN Describes Recent Israeli Strikes in Gaza as ‘Horrific’ as Death Toll Exceeds 68,600

The United Nations (UN) on Wednesday called the recent Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip “horrific.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said that the attacks on Tuesday evening reportedly hit schools, homes, and tents of displaced people, killing over 100 Palestinians. Turk stressed that the laws of war clearly require the protection of civilians and their infrastructure, and the Israeli forces must follow international humanitarian law and be held responsible for any violations.

Turk also said it was sad that these “horrific massacres” happened when people in Gaza, who have suffered for a long time, were just starting to feel hopeful that the intense bombing might end.

Earlier that day, Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported that hospitals received 104 Palestinians killed in the Tuesday airstrikes, including 46 children and 40 women, and 253 wounded, including 78 children and 84 women.

Palestinian medical sources announced today that the total number of people killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli operation on October 7, 2023, has risen to 68,643. Most of those killed are children and women. The number of injured has also increased to 170,655.

The sources added that many victims are still trapped under the rubble, and ambulance and rescue teams cannot reach them. (With input from TPQ)
