DHAKA/NEW DELHI: In a horrifying incident of mob violence, a 25-year-old Hindu man was lynched to death and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. The deceased, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, was a worker at a local garment factory.
According to police officials, the incident occurred late Thursday night when an enraged mob confronted Das outside the factory, accusing him of making derogatory remarks. The crowd reportedly beat him to death, tied his body to a tree, and set it ablaze. The charred remains were later left on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, leading to a massive traffic gridlock as protesters continued to gather.
The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government issued a strongly-worded statement on Friday, condemning the “heinous crime” and asserting that there is no room for such communal violence in the country. “The perpetrators will not be spared,” the government warned. Local police have since recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy at Mymensingh Medical College. This incident comes amid heightened tensions in Bangladesh following a series of attacks on minority communities and media houses. (ET)
