Historic Win for BJP: VV Rajesh Becomes First BJP Mayor in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior BJP leader VV Rajesh has scripted history by becoming the first-ever mayor from the saffron party in the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation. The 49-year-old leader’s victory has effectively ended the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) long-standing 40-year rule over the capital city’s municipal body.

Rajesh clinched the mayor post with 51 votes, while two votes were declared invalid. The corporation premises were packed with hundreds of enthusiastic party workers who gathered to witness the landmark swearing-in ceremony. For the deputy mayor election scheduled for the afternoon, the BJP has fielded GS Ashanath as its candidate.

In the recently concluded local body polls, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 50 out of the 101 total seats. The party managed to cross the majority mark by gaining the support of independent candidate Pattoor Radhakrishnan, who won from the Kannammoola ward.

The LDF finished with 29 seats, while the Congress-led UDF secured 19 seats. Election in the Vizhinjam ward was postponed following the demise of an independent candidate. Rajesh, a representative of the Kodunganoor ward, is serving his second term in the corporation.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prominent figures including BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, former state president K. Surendran, and CPM leader Kadakampally Surendran. (TNIE)
