Hong Kong High-Rise Fire Death Toll Hits 44; 279 Missing; Construction Executives Arrested for Manslaughter.

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Nov 27): The death toll from a massive fire that swept through multiple high-rise towers in Hong Kong has climbed to 44, with 279 people still missing, according to Chinese official media reports on Thursday.

Hong Kong Police Force announced the arrest of three men on suspicion of manslaughter related to the blaze that began at Wang Fuk Court on Wednesday. The arrested individuals, aged 52 to 68, include two company directors and a project consultant for a construction firm responsible for the building’s renovation. Authorities believe their gross negligence led to the high number of casualties.

Chief Executive John Lee confirmed the number of missing persons in what he termed the worst fire in Hong Kong’s history involving high-rise blocks, adding that at least 45 people were injured.

The police investigation suggests that the protective materials—nets, waterproof canvas, and plastic cloth—covering the buildings may have failed to meet fireproof standards. Furthermore, the use of polyurethane foam, a highly flammable material, to seal windows in elevator lobbies is being investigated as a possible cause for the rapid spread of the fire.

Chinese President Xi Jinping extended condolences over the tragedy on Wednesday night and directed central authorities to support the HKSAR government’s all-out efforts in search and rescue, treating the injured, and comforting victims’ families. (PTI)
