Kerala Budget 2026: Rs 14,500 Crore Allocated for Pensions; Hike in Honorariums for ASHA and Anganwadi Workers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (Jan 29): Kerala Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal presented the state budget for the financial year 2026-27 today, introducing a wave of welfare measures ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The Minister announced a significant allocation of Rs 14,500 crore specifically for social security pensions, aiming to ensure financial stability for the state’s vulnerable populations.

In a move to support frontline community workers, the budget announced a hike of Rs 1,000 in the monthly honorarium for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers. Anganwadi helpers will receive a monthly increase of Rs 500. Furthermore, the pay for pre-primary teachers and literacy mission motivators has been increased by Rs 1,000 per month, while the daily wages of school cooking staff saw a hike of Rs 25.

Another standout feature of the budget is the allocation of Rs 3,720 crore for the Chief Minister’s ‘Stree Suraksha’ scheme. Under this initiative, women between the ages of 35 and 60 who do not currently benefit from any other welfare schemes will receive a monthly pension of Rs 1,000. Finance Minister Balagopal emphasized that despite financial constraints, the government remains committed to its social welfare obligations and the empowerment of its citizens. (PTI)
