LDF Campaign Will Expose SIR as an Attack on Democracy and Equality: CPI Secretary Binoy Viswam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a conversation with TNIE, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam outlined the LDF’s unified stance on key issues ahead of the local body elections, from the Sabarimala gold theft controversy to welfare pensions. He stressed the importance of Left unity, people-centric development, and strong resistance to the BJP’s ideological agenda.

On the Sabarimala and Man-Animal Conflict Controversies: Viswam stated that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) fully supports the SIT investigation into the Sabarimala issue and that the government will not shield anyone involved. He emphasized that this commitment to transparency will be openly communicated during the campaign. Regarding the man-animal conflict, he affirmed the LDF’s position: “human life comes first.” While recognizing the value of biodiversity, he said the priority must be to protect people when their lives are threatened.

Bringing the SIR Issue to the Campaign: Viswam was vocal in his opposition to the Socio-Economic Registration (SIR) scheme, calling it a “BJP-RSS scheme to deny voting rights to Dalits, Adivasis, and the poor.” He traced the scheme’s ideological roots to Golwalkar’s ‘Bunch of Thoughts,’ which, he argued, insists that only those who accept their version of religion and culture deserve citizenship. “Their vision is rooted in chaturvarnya and Manusmriti, excluding marginalized communities,” Viswam said, referencing its alleged impact in Bihar. “Our campaign will expose SIR as an attack on democracy and equality.”

LDF Unity on PM SHRI: Addressing past differences between the CPI and CPM over the PM SHRI scheme, Viswam stated that the LDF approached the issue with complete unity from the start. He called PM SHRI a matter touching on ideology, politics, education, and values, noting, “When the BJP tries to push its chaturvarnya-based agenda into education, the Left can only oppose it.” He stressed that both parties share this core position, resulting in a single clear LDF stand. “That unity is the strength of the LDF. This is not the victory of one party, but of all partners together,” he asserted.

Impact of Welfare Pensions: Viswam confidently stated that the increase in welfare pensions will electorally benefit the LDF. More importantly, he argued, it reflects the LDF’s core development vision. Dismissing previous mockery from the UDF, he said: “The UDF once mocked us as a ‘pension government,’ but we proudly stand by it. For us, development is not just highways and big projects, it is improving people’s lives and giving them hope. Yes, we are a pension and kit government, but for the poor. That shows clearly who we represent.” (TNIE)
