LDF Faces Setback in Local Body Polls; UDF Registers Major Victory, NDA Clinches Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has suffered a significant setback in the local body elections, which were widely regarded as the semi-final contest ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The United Democratic Front (UDF) registered an impressive victory by reclaiming lost corporations, doubling its count in Municipalities and Block Panchayats, and securing over five hundred Grama Panchayats. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) scripted history by winning the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, marking the first time the alliance has won a Corporation in Kerala.

The LDF, which ruled five Corporations in the previous term, could only emerge as the single largest party in Kozhikode this time. Even there, they failed to secure an absolute majority to govern independently. The UDF, which had only secured Kannur in 2020, managed to reclaim Kochi and Thrissur with substantial majorities this time. The UDF also staged a major upset in the Kollam Corporation. Furthermore, the UDF succeeded in increasing its seat tally in both Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

Municipalities: The UDF secured control of 54 out of the 86 Municipalities. The LDF managed to win only 28, while the NDA secured a majority in two Municipalities.

Block Panchayats: Out of the total 143 Block Panchayats, 81 shifted in favour of the UDF. The Left Front managed to win 63.

Grama Panchayats: The UDF secured a majority in over 500 Grama Panchayats. The Left Front won 342, while the NDA won 25. The remaining eight were secured by others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted swiftly after the BJP broke the ‘Red Fort’ stronghold and secured the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in the local body elections. The Prime Minister simply posted “Thank you Thiruvananthapuram” on X (formerly Twitter).

In his statement, the Prime Minister described the majority secured by the BJP-NDA alliance in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as a crucial moment in Kerala politics. “The people are confident that only the BJP can fulfil the developmental aspirations of the state. Kerala is tired of the LDF and the UDF. The public expects good governance from the NDA,” Modi added. He affirmed that the BJP would work towards the growth of the vibrant city.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet was shared with the hashtag #VikasithaKerala
