A major problem with Microsoft’s services caused widespread interruptions (outages) across many different internet platforms, including large banks, gaming networks, and phone companies on Wednesday evening.
The online tracker Down detector reported a spike in complaints, with over 2,000 reports for Xbox and at least 500 for Microsoft Outlook by 6 pm. Heathrow Airport was also reportedly affected by the issues.
Microsoft Azure, the company’s cloud computing platform, confirmed it found the main cause of the service problem and was working quickly to fix it. Microsoft warned that users might have trouble with its admin center and delays with other Microsoft 365 services. However, the company expected its systems to be fully recovered by 11:20 p.m.
In a statement at 7:22 pm, Microsoft said: They successfully finished implementing their ‘last known good’ configuration (a stable version of the system).
Customers were starting to see “initial signs of recovery.”
The company was recovering network nodes and redirecting traffic through healthy nodes, promising that service would continue to improve.
Customer configuration changes were temporarily blocked while they worked on the fix. (with input from The Independent UK)
