Mob Lynching in Kerala Shatters Chhattisgarh Migrant’s Dream of Building a Home

THRISSUR: A 35-year-old woman, Lalitha, sits frozen in grief at a party office in Thrissur, unable to process the brutal killing of her husband, Ramnarayan Baghel. Ramnarayan, a migrant worker from Chhattisgarh, was lynched by a mob at Attappallam in Palakkad on December 17 on baseless suspicions of theft and his nationality.

The tragedy has brought a promising life to a violent end. Ramnarayan, a skilled mason who earned a meager ₹250 a day in his hometown, had traveled to Kerala just days earlier with the hope of earning enough to complete the concrete roof of their half-built house.

Heart-wrenching Details:

Unfulfilled Dreams: “Brick by brick, we built it,” Lalitha shared, explaining that her husband came to Kerala solely to fund the final stages of their dream home.

The Final Call: Ramnarayan left for Kerala on December 13. Upon arrival, he called his brother to say he had reached safely, but Lalitha—who does not own a phone—never got the chance to speak to him one last time.

Orphaned Childhood: The couple’s children, aged 10 and 9, remain unaware of the gravity of the situation, watching videos on a mobile phone while their mother mourns nearby.

The incident has sparked a debate on the safety of migrant workers in the state and the dangerous consequences of mob justice fueled by rumors. (TNIE)
