The registration specifically recognizes the two primary varieties of the breed known as ‘Chara’ and ‘Chemballi’. The Chara variety is characterized by its dark brown feathers with black markings, while the Chemballi variety features a lighter brown hue. Currently, there is an estimated population of 18 lakh Kuttanadan ducks spread across the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. Known as one of the most productive indigenous duck breeds in India, the Kuttanadan duck is capable of laying up to 250 eggs annually, which are generally heavier than those of other breeds.
Beyond productivity, the breed is highly valued for its natural immunity and its ability to thrive in the specific climatic conditions of the Kerala backwaters. Their resistance to diseases and the high quality of both their meat and eggs make them a vital part of the local economy. Experts believe that this national genetic registration will provide a legal and scientific framework for the conservation of the breed and boost the commercial prospects of traditional duck farmers in the Kuttanad region.
