National Recognition for Kuttanadan Duck; Receives Official NBAGR Genetic Registration.

ALAPPUZHA: In a significant achievement for Kerala’s agricultural sector, the indigenous Kuttanadan duck has been officially registered by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This official genetic recognition was granted following a comprehensive study and application led by the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. With this, the Kuttanadan duck joins the elite list of recognized Kerala breeds such as the Vechur cow, Malabari goat, Attappadi Black goat, and Thalassery chicken.

The registration specifically recognizes the two primary varieties of the breed known as ‘Chara’ and ‘Chemballi’. The Chara variety is characterized by its dark brown feathers with black markings, while the Chemballi variety features a lighter brown hue. Currently, there is an estimated population of 18 lakh Kuttanadan ducks spread across the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. Known as one of the most productive indigenous duck breeds in India, the Kuttanadan duck is capable of laying up to 250 eggs annually, which are generally heavier than those of other breeds.

Beyond productivity, the breed is highly valued for its natural immunity and its ability to thrive in the specific climatic conditions of the Kerala backwaters. Their resistance to diseases and the high quality of both their meat and eggs make them a vital part of the local economy. Experts believe that this national genetic registration will provide a legal and scientific framework for the conservation of the breed and boost the commercial prospects of traditional duck farmers in the Kuttanad region.
