PM Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman on BNP’s Landslide Victory in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday warmly congratulated Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on his party’s “decisive victory” in the 13th parliamentary elections. In a post on X, the Prime Minister stated that the win reflects the immense trust the people of Bangladesh have placed in Rahman’s leadership.

“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” PM Modi wrote, adding that he looks forward to working closely with the new leadership to strengthen multifaceted bilateral ties and advance shared development goals.

The elections, held on February 12, 2026, marked the first major democratic test for the nation since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Unofficial results indicate that the BNP-led alliance has secured over 200 seats in the 300-member parliament, achieving a commanding two-thirds majority. Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance is poised to become the primary opposition. Tarique Rahman, who returned to Dhaka from exile in late 2025, is expected to be sworn in as the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh. (PTI)
