PM Modi’s Landmark Oman Visit: India and Oman Sign CEPA; Adopt Joint Vision for Maritime Cooperation

MUSCAT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a highly successful two-day official visit to the Sultanate of Oman from December 17-18, 2025, marking a historic milestone as the two nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties. Upon his arrival, the PM was accorded a ceremonial welcome and later held high-level consultations with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at Al Baraka Palace.

The visit culminated in the signing of several pivotal agreements, most notably the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This agreement is expected to significantly boost bilateral trade by reducing tariffs and creating a stable framework for investments.

Key Highlights of the Joint Statement:
Strategic & Defence Ties: Both leaders adopted a Joint Vision Document on Maritime Cooperation, focusing on regional security and the blue economy. They agreed to enhance information sharing to combat piracy and maritime crimes.

Energy Collaboration: A strong emphasis was placed on the future of energy, with both sides looking to collaborate on Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia projects.

Agriculture and Education: New MoUs were signed in the fields of agriculture, including millet cultivation, and higher education to facilitate faculty and student exchanges.

Cultural Connection: To further academic ties, an ICCR Chair of Indian Studies will be established at Sohar University. The PM also appreciated the welfare of the nearly 6.75 lakh-strong Indian community in Oman.

Regional Peace: On international matters, both leaders expressed concern over the situation in Gaza, calling for a sovereign Palestinian state and a lasting resolution through diplomacy.

The visit has effectively transformed the long-standing maritime relationship into a multifaceted strategic partnership, setting a roadmap for “Viksit Bharat 2047” and Oman’s “Vision 2040.”
