President Murmu Makes History, Offers Prayers at Sabarimala After Performing Irumudikettu at Pampa

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu visited the famous Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala. Before going to the main temple (Sannidhanam), she took part in the traditional Irumudikettu ritual at Pampa. The Irumudikettu is the sacred twin-bundle of offerings carried by Sabarimala devotees.

The President arrived at Pampa around 11 a.m. in a special motorcade. As part of the tradition, she symbolically washed her feet in the Pampa River and then prayed at the nearby Ganapathi temple. The Chief Priest, Vishnu Namboothiri, oversaw the preparation of the Irumudikettu for the President and her staff.

She was accompanied by her Aide-de-Camp Saurabh S. Nair, Personal Security Officer Vinay Mathur, and son-in-law Ganesh Chandra Hombrom. Under tight security, the group then traveled to the temple.

Earlier in the morning, President Murmu had arrived by helicopter at the Pramadom stadium ground at 8:40 a.m. She was welcomed by the Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan, local MLAs, the District Collector, and the District Police Chief.

This visit is historic because President Murmu is the first woman President of India to pray at the Sabarimala temple.
