Sabarimala Gold Theft: Arrested Thanthri Rajeevaru Claims Innocence, Blames ‘Systemic Failures’.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The arrest of Sabarimala Thanthri Kandararu Rajeevaru in connection with the gold misappropriation case has sparked a major controversy in Kerala. Currently in 14-day judicial custody, the Thanthri has moved a bail plea in the Kollam Vigilance Court, asserting that he is being unfairly targeted for administrative lapses.

Key Arguments from the Bail Plea:
Limited Role: Rajeevaru argued that his duties are strictly spiritual and ritualistic. According to the TDB Manual, he has no role in the administrative handling or custody of temple artefacts.

Legal Stand: He claimed that charges of criminal misappropriation do not apply to him as he did not personally benefit from the property nor permit others to do so.

Health Issues: Citing advanced neuropathy and cardiac ailments, he requested urgent medical intervention and bail on health grounds.

The SIT’s Allegations: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) claims that the Thanthri gave a “silent nod” to the removal of gold-clad plates from the temple. They allege he was aware of the misappropriation but chose to support the prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potti.

Political Fallout: The Thanthri’s relative, Rahul Easwar, has termed the arrest “politically motivated,” questioning how the SIT can evaluate complex Tantric procedures or “deity’s consent.” With Rajeevaru’s arrest on January 9, the total number of arrests in this high-profile case has reached 11, including former Devaswom Board presidents and officials.
