The incident took place around midnight during the Mayana Kollai festival while devotees were pulling the massive chariot toward the Palar River. Video footage of the mishap shows the decorated chariot losing its balance and crashing onto its side, causing a panic as people nearby rushed to safety. The injured individuals were immediately shifted to a local hospital for treatment.
