Sheikh Hasina Warns Millions Will Boycott Bangladesh Polls if Awami League is Barred; Says She ‘Lives Freely in Delhi’

Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated that she will not return home until a “legitimate government” is in power and has warned that millions of voters will boycott next year’s general election if her party, the Awami League (AL), is banned from contesting.

Hasina fled Bangladesh in August 2024 following a student-led uprising and has since been living in New Delhi. In recent interviews, the 78-year-old former PM gave updates on her situation and the political crisis in her country.

Life in Exile: Hasina told Reuters that she lives “freely but cautiously” in Delhi, mindful of her family’s “violent history.” She expressed a desire to return home, but only when “the government there was legitimate, the Constitution was being upheld, and law and order genuinely prevailed.”

Boycott Threat: The Awami League’s registration was suspended in May by the Bangladesh Election Commission, which cited national security and war crimes investigations against senior leaders. Hasina called the ban “unjust” and “self-defeating,” arguing that it would disenfranchise millions of supporters. She confirmed she will not return under any government formed after an election that excludes her party.

Crimes Against Humanity Trial: Hasina is currently facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka for her alleged role in the violent 2024 crackdown, which the UN estimates left over 1,400 people dead. Prosecutors have sought the death penalty.

Denial of Charges: Hasina vehemently denied the charges, calling the proceedings a “politically motivated charade” run by a “sham court.” A verdict in her case is expected on November 13.

No Apology for Killings: While she said she mourns the victims of the 2024 protests, Hasina refused to issue an apology for the deaths. She maintained that the Awami League will eventually return to play a key role in the country’s future.
