Sri Lanka Recovers 80 Bodies of Iranian Sailors After US Submarine Sinks Warship.

COLOMBO/WASHINGTON: Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday confirmed the recovery of approximately 80 bodies of Iranian sailors following the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off the island’s southern coast. The warship, which was carrying around 180 personnel, was struck and sunk by a United States submarine in international waters.

While the Sri Lankan Navy managed to rescue 32 sailors and stabilize them at the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle, nearly 100 individuals remain missing. In a press briefing at the Pentagon, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike, stating it was the first time since World War II that a US submarine had sunk an enemy vessel using a torpedo. The IRIS Dena was reportedly returning to Iran after participating in the International Fleet Review (MILAN 2026) in Visakhapatnam, India. The incident marks a significant expansion of the Middle East conflict into the strategic waters of the Indian Ocean. (PTI)
