Teenager Gored to Death, 53 Injured During Jallikattu in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY: A 16-year-old schoolboy lost his life and 53 others were injured during a Jallikattu event organized in Tiruchy on Wednesday. The event, held at the Jamal Mohamed College of Teacher Education ground as part of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s birthday celebrations, also resulted in the death of a bull.

The deceased, identified as I. Pradeep, an 11th-grade student from Karur district, was at the ‘collection point’ when a bull gored him. Although he was rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, he was declared brought dead. Out of the 53 injured, 13 individuals are reported to have sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalized.

Criticism Over Venue Choice:

The decision to host the event in a densely populated area surrounded by educational institutions has drawn sharp criticism from local residents and officials. The massive influx of 690 bulls and 550 tamers led to a major traffic gridlock on Race Course Road. Locals alleged that bulls were precariously tethered along public roads and some even broke free, causing panic among shopkeepers and pedestrians. While authorities confirmed the event had government permission, the choice of venue in a residential hub is being viewed as a significant oversight in public safety management. (TNIE)
