Time for India to Reset Policies as US Shows ‘Imperialist’ Intent, Says Expert

BENGALURU: Recent claims by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have sparked fresh uncertainty over the India-US trade deal. Lutnick suggested the deal stalled because PM Narendra Modi didn’t call President Trump—a claim India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed as “inaccurate,” noting the two leaders spoke eight times in 2025.

With the US signaling that old trade terms are no longer on the table, experts believe India must rethink its strategy. Brigadier Anil Raman from the Takshashila Institution warned that the world is moving away from a “rules-based order” toward a period of “personality-based imperialism.”

Key Concerns Highlighted:

US Actions: The recent abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland using military force show a disregard for international law.

The “Trump Corollary”: A shift where the US openly overrides the sovereignty of other nations to control resources, as seen in their stance on Venezuela’s oil.

India’s Strategy: To survive this environment, India needs to strengthen itself from within. This includes fast-tracking administrative reforms, reducing social tensions, and building a self-reliant military supply chain.

According to Raman, in this new era, power and strategic utility have become more important than treaties. For India, staying unified and fixing domestic weaknesses is the only way to resist external pressure. (TNIE)
