Tit-for-Tat: Bangladesh Bans IPL Broadcast Following Mustafizur Row

DHAKA: In a fresh wave of retaliatory measures, the Bangladesh government on Monday imposed a blanket ban on the broadcasting of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The move follows the BCCI’s directive to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their 2026 squad.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a stern statement, noting that the BCCI failed to provide any “logical reason” for the pacer’s ouster. This development comes just 24 hours after Bangladesh formally refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup, requesting the ICC to move their fixtures to co-host Sri Lanka.

“The BCCI’s decision has deeply hurt and aggrieved the people of Bangladesh,” the government notification stated, adding that the telecast ban would remain in effect “until further notice.”

The ongoing friction highlights the crumbling diplomatic ties between the two neighbors since the ouster of former PM Sheikh Hasina last August. While BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia attributed Mustafizur’s release to “developments all around,” the lack of specificity has clearly triggered a sharp response from Dhaka.
