KOCHI: The inclusion of Twenty20 into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has significantly boosted the morale of the Kerala BJP. Frustrated by non-performing allies, the BJP sees Twenty20 as a hardworking and disciplined partner that aligns with its vision of a “Viksit Keralam” (Developed Kerala).
Stagnation of Existing Allies: Despite having eight partners like BDJS, Kamraj Congress, and Shiv Sena, BJP cadres have long complained about a lack of support in booth-level campaigning. The BDJS, led by Thushar Vellappally, entered the NDA in 2015 with high expectations of tapping into the 24% Ezhava vote bank. However, the NDA’s vote share has remained largely stagnant since their entry, and the party has failed to build an independent organizational network despite the support of SNDP Yogam.
The Twenty20 Advantage: In contrast, Twenty20 brings a proven track record of governing four panchayats and a development-oriented model that has won the confidence of the youth. Their corporate-style discipline and corruption-free image are expected to provide the missing momentum for the NDA in the state. The move marks a shift from Twenty20’s previous policy of maintaining “equidistance” from major political fronts. (TNIE)
