UN Security Council to Hold Emergency Session on Israeli Strikes in Qatar

The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency session on Wednesday to discuss Israel’s recent strikes on a residential compound in Doha, Qatar. The strikes, which targeted members of Hamas’s political bureau, were carried out by Israel and have prompted a request for the meeting from Algeria and Pakistan.

Senior officials from the UN Secretariat are expected to brief Council members on the latest developments and the severity of the Israeli escalation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty and praising the country’s “very positive role” in mediating a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Guterres stressed that all parties should work towards a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, “not destroying it.”

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior reported on Tuesday that three people were killed in the attack, including a member of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and Humam Khalil Al Hayya, the son of Hamas Political Bureau chief Khalil Al Hayya. Several civilians were also reported injured.
