Youth Leader Sharif Osman Hadi Passes Away; Violence Breaks Out in Dhaka, Newspaper Offices Set Ablaze

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s capital witnessed a sudden outbreak of violence early Friday morning following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader of the 2024 pro-democracy movement. The 32-year-old leader succumbed to his injuries at a Singapore hospital on Thursday after surviving an initial assassination attempt in Dhaka.

Grieved by the news, thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits behind the attack. The situation turned volatile as several buildings, including the corporate offices of the country’s leading dailies—The Daily Star and Prothom Alo—were targeted and set on fire. Reports indicate that several staff members were trapped inside the burning buildings while the unrest unfolded.

Hadi was a pivotal figure in the student-led uprising that successfully ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year. He was actively campaigning for a seat in the upcoming February 2026 national elections. On December 12, he was shot by masked assailants while exiting a mosque in the capital. Despite being airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care, he passed away after a six-day battle for life. The Fire Brigade and Civil Defence officials confirmed multiple cases of arson across the city as tensions remain high.
