Shah Rukh Khan at 60: The Star Who Asked for Love and Got a Lifetime of Adulation

Shah Rukh Khan is a star who gained fame through the old Doordarshan serial Fauji and then entered the film world. Even after 30 years in cinema, he remains a central figure in our attention today. The story of how he honed his acting skills under mentor Barry John while working in theatre during his school and college days in Delhi is well-known to everyone. Similarly, his strong middle-class background, the memories of his parents who passed away before witnessing his success, his loving relationship with friends and family from Delhi, and his love marriage are all part of the Shah Rukh Khan legend.

When he entered Hindi cinema, it was not like today; it was a film community run by small studios, much like ‘mom-and-pop stores’. Nevertheless, being at the right time and right place gave him a break in Raj Kanwar’s 1992 film ‘Deewana’. His debut was as a co-star alongside Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti. The scene where he is riding a motorcycle on Marine Drive and singing the song “koi na koi chahiye, pyaar karne wala” was completely cinematic. That song was like a kind of manifestation. He asked for love, and he received it in an overflowing form.

From fulfilling his desire to own one of the most sought-after properties in Mumbai, Mannat, to becoming the biggest star in the film world, Shah Rukh Khan’s Bollywood journey is as beautiful as a film. In a recent interview, producer Viveck Vaswani spoke about Shah Rukh Khan and shared an interesting story about how Hema Malini signed Shah Rukh for the film ‘Dil Aashna Hai’.

While celebrating Shah Rukh’s 60th birthday, Viveck Vaswani spoke with Radio Nasha and shared several anecdotes from his career. He recalled that Shah Rukh was living with him while seeking his first opportunity. It was then that Hema Malini called Viveck unexpectedly, and he remembers that neither Shah Rukh nor Viveck was prepared for their conversation.
