WASHINGTON: The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has entered the Middle East, having been redirected from its Indo-Pacific deployment due to escalating tensions with Iran, defense officials confirmed.
As of Monday, the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) has officially joined the U.S. 5th Fleet. The strike group brings significant firepower to the region, including Carrier Air Wing 9 and three advanced destroyers: USS Frank E. Petersen, Jr., USS Spruance, and USS Michael Murphy.
Initially departing from San Diego in November, the group had been operating in the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. This move marks the third time an Indo-Pacific strike group has been rerouted to the Middle East to address regional instability. With the Abraham Lincoln’s departure, the only remaining U.S. carrier in the Indo-Pacific region is the USS George Washington, which is currently undergoing maintenance in Japan.
